JOHANNESBURG – Cosatu has thrown its support behind the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union.
Saccawu is taking Walmart-owned Massmart to court over the dismissal of nearly 600 employees.
The workers were engaged in a legal, protected strike which centered on wages and employment conditions.
Despite the legal status of the strike, Massmart accused workers of violating picketing rules, and sacked them.
This dismissal took place while wage negotiations were still continuing, exacerbating tensions between the company and the union.
Cosatu has commended Saccawu for defending the rights of the workers dismissed.
